Area Calculator
How It Works
This area calculator uses established formulas to provide accurate results.
The basic rule:
- Rectangle: A = length × width
- Triangle: A = ½ × base × height
- Circle: A = π × r²
- Trapezoid: A = ½ × (b₁ + b₂) × height
Results are estimates. Consult a professional for critical decisions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is area?
Area is the amount of space inside a two-dimensional shape, measured in square units. It tells you how many unit squares would fit inside the shape.
How do you calculate the area of a triangle?
Use the formula A = ½ × base × height. The height must be perpendicular to the base. For example, a triangle with base 8 and height 6 has area ½ × 8 × 6 = 24 square units.
Why is the area of a circle π × r²?
This formula comes from calculus, but intuitively, a circle can be broken into many thin triangular slices that, when rearranged, form a rectangle with width r and length πr, giving area πr².
What is the difference between area and perimeter?
Area measures the space inside a shape (square units), while perimeter measures the distance around the outside of a shape (linear units). For example, a room's floor space is area; the baseboard around the room is perimeter.
