Exponent Rules Calculator
How It Works
This exponent rules calculator uses established formulas to provide accurate results.
The basic rule:
- Product rule: aᵐ · aⁿ = aᵐ⁺ⁿ
- Quotient rule: aᵐ / aⁿ = aᵐ⁻ⁿ
- Power rule: (aᵐ)ⁿ = aᵐ·ⁿ
Results are estimates. Consult a professional for critical decisions.

What are the basic exponent rules?
The three main rules are: Product rule (same base, add exponents), Quotient rule (same base, subtract exponents), and Power rule (power of a power, multiply exponents). These only apply to the same base.
What is a⁰?
Any nonzero number raised to the 0 power equals 1. This follows from the quotient rule: a³/a³ = a⁰ = 1. Note that 0⁰ is considered indeterminate.
Can I add exponents with different bases?
No. The product rule aᵐ · aⁿ = aᵐ⁺ⁿ only works when the bases are the same. For different bases like 2³ · 3², you must compute each power separately and then multiply.
