What does SOH CAH TOA stand for?
SOH CAH TOA is a mnemonic for the three basic trig ratios: Sine = Opposite/Hypotenuse (SOH), Cosine = Adjacent/Hypotenuse (CAH), Tangent = Opposite/Adjacent (TOA).
Which sides are opposite and adjacent?
The opposite side is across from the angle you are measuring. The adjacent side is next to the angle (not the hypotenuse). The hypotenuse is always the longest side, opposite the right angle.
When do I use SOH CAH TOA?
Use SOH CAH TOA in right triangles to find a missing side when you know an angle and one side, or to find an angle when you know two sides.
Can sine or cosine be greater than 1?
No. Since the opposite and adjacent sides are always shorter than the hypotenuse, sine and cosine values are always between -1 and 1. Tangent, however, can be any real number.
